“FY2016 Joint Symposium on Tenure Track by Kyushu Institute of Technology and Yamaguchi University” was held at the Nakamura Centenary Memorial Hall on Tobata Campus, Kyushu Institute of Technology, on January 31, 2017 (Tuesday). About 60 people, including attendees from other universities, participated. The symposium commenced with an opening address by Mr. Yuji Oie, President of Kyushu Institute of Technology, and after a guest speech by Mr. Hiroyuki Karasawa, Director of the Office of Human Resources Development for Science and Technology at the Science and Technology Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Mr. Toshiaki Enoki, Program Officer of the Japan Science and Technology Agency, delivered a keynote speech on the “Tenure Track System and the cultivation of young researchers.” Following that, Mr. Shuji Hayase, a Trustee / Vice President of this university, and Mr. Kazuhiro Tanaka, a Trustee / Vice President of Yamaguchi University, reported on the achievements of the Tenure Track Expansion and Entrenchment Program at each respective university. Furthermore, Mr. Hisafumi Yamada, an advisor at KFT Co., Ltd., delivered a lecture on the “Human resources companies seek from universities.”
After that, a total of 11 tenure track staff and tenure faculty members gave “3-minute speeches by tenure track staff” in which they presented the content and appeal of their research in an easy-to-understand way. After that, two people each from the Kyushu Institute of Technology and Yamaguchi University presented “lab reports by tenure track staff and tenure faculty members.” Finally, a panel discussion was held with the theme “Laboratory management as a PI,” and opinions were shared and discussed from the perspectives of companies, tenure faculty members and tenure track staff. The symposium was a great success, with the closing address given by Mr. Kenji Hori, a Trustee / Vice President of Yamaguchi University.
